Ss Simon & Jude, Cockshutt

Originally dedicated to St Helena, the Church of Ss Simon & Jude is testament to the worship of Christianity on this site for over 500 years, in defiance of the Reformation, social upheaval and war. Rebuilt in the late 18th century its facade is without fanfare, its interior modest and unadorned.  Far from majestic, sitting in the tranquility of the Churchyard, Ss Simon & Jude remains the focus of Christian faith in Cockshutt, offering peace and refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  It is open every day for locals and visitors alike.

St. John the Evangelist, Colemere

Situated at one end of the lovely wooded mere that is Colemere, the Church’s location remains an important part of its mission to visitors and residents alike.  The church was designed by G E Street, one of the great architects of his age (he also restored York Minster and Salisbury cathedral). The foundation stone was laid on 3rd June 1869 and local stone, brought from Cefn by canal to Lyneal Wharf, was used in the construction.

Today the church stands out as the simple yet beautiful crown in the jewel that is Colemere.  As members of the congregation of St John the Evangelist church, we believe we are called to be at the heart of the community, growing God’s Kingdom amongst residents and visitors by providing a visible Christian presence and witness.

Ss Raphael & Isidore, Petton

Since 1159 there has been a Christian presence at Petton. From its early origins as a Motte and Bailey construction, the Church has long commanded majestic views of the surrounding Shropshire countryside – from Hawkstone to the Wrekin and across to the Stiperstones.

Perhaps the most striking of all the features of Petton church are the wonderful stained glass windows, all except one having been made by Ward and Hughes, a well known London firm of glass painters. The first window to be fitted was the fine East window depicting Holman Hunt’s famous painting, ‘The Light of the World’.

Although a relatively small church, visitors to Petton often comment on the warm welcome and sense of Christian community they find here. Members of the church work very hard to raise money and awareness for the projects supported as part of our concern for Justice and Care.

With its sense of history and concern for living out the Christian life, Petton church remains a very special place.

St. Michael & All Angels, Welshampton

The village of Welshampton is located in the northern part of the peaceful North Shropshire countryside between the historic market towns of Whitchurch and Ellesmere. Over the years the village has changed gradually from a thriving homestead for the farming community to a pleasant and characterful Shropshire village.

At the heart of all this stands the church of St Michael and All Angels – one of the most notable features of the village. With its ’round house’ gable and beautiful lychgate, the church was described at its consecration in 1863 as “one of the prettiest ecclesiastical architecture of which this or any other country can boast”. High praise indeed!

Today Welshampton is a thriving rural church with modern facilities and a respect for the inheritance handed on from previous generations of the faithful.
