Words from the Wardens – Reflections on October 2023

Ss. Simon & Jude, Cockshutt

On Sunday 8th October we held our Harvest Festival, which was led by Rev’d Edith Quirey (ret’d) on her first visit to the Benefice.  It was a beautiful, sunny morning, one which seemed to inspire visitors to join us in this service of thanksgiving to God for a successful harvest and those who produce our food.  The church was decorated with flowers which echoed the warm tones of Autumn, and the fragrance of apples and pears filled the air.  Thank you to everyone for your donations, help and gifts of food which were taken to Ellesmere Food Bank.

Afterwards, we made our way to the Millennium Hall for a delicious Harvest lunch, and of course, a raffle.

Rev’d Rob Haarfhoff (ret’d) led our service on 22nd October and Rev’d John Darch (ret’d) led the Benefice service, which we hosted, on 29th October.  Thank you to all the retired Priests who freely give of their time to lead us in our worship and the celebration of Holy Eucharist.

On 28th October, the altar frontage was changed to the liturgical colour of red, in commemoration of the Feast Day of our Patronal Saints, Simon & Jude, both of whom were martyred for their faith.

Ss Simon & Jude is always open and welcomes everyone through its doors, whether you wish to attend a service, sit quietly in private prayer, or simply enjoy visiting an old, rural church!

Best Wishes,

Cathy and John
