Although billed as Sunday School, a large congregation was present for a Mothering Sunday service this morning. The thoughtfully prepared service with carefully chosen hymns was conducted by Margaret ably assisted by members of the Young Church and Sunday School. We heard of the love of mothers and the love of God ‘who sent his only Son for us’. Indeed, it was the participation of the youngsters that made it so refreshing and meaningful. They took part in the interactive address; read the lessons and prayers, and Emily sang Morning has broken beautifully and in tune (not easy).
All the mothers present were given bunches of spring flowers and everyone received a gift of flower seeds. Afterwards the Lenten fast was lifted to allow everyone to enjoy coffee and the delicious refreshments provided by Joanne and the hospitality team. It is surely remarkable to find such activity in our quiet country church as we constantly hear the doomsters lament the state of the Church of England.
Through the course of a month everyone is catered for here: the first Sunday is Holy Communion in traditional language; the second is Sunday School / Young Church; the third is Holy Communion in modern language; and the fourth is a family service. All this was beautifully expressed in one of the hymns, “graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven”.
